Telangana sees a decline in Covid cases after last week’s surge

Telangana is one of the states experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases in March, but health officials say there is no need to panic because the number fluctuates.

Since March 1, when the state had 21 cases, the daily count of Covid cases has more than doubled. During the first ten days, the number fluctuated between 15 and 42.

The next five days saw a further increase. The highest tally so far this month was 54 on March 15. It was 52 on March 14.

According to data released by the director of public health, the daily count decreased after March 15. On March 16, the state recorded 27 cases, 25 on March 17, and 24 on March 18.

On March 19, the number Covid tally fell to 16. A total of 3,077 samples were tested, officials said.

Six of the 16 reported cases were from the Hyderabad district. 22 of the 33 districts reported no cases. There were also 32 recoveries on the day. The rate of recovery was 99.5 percent. There were no new deaths reported.

According to the director of public health, a total of 237 Covid cases are being treated/isolated.

The Centre issued an advisory to six states, including Telangana, last week in response to the rising number of cases. It directed states to examine the situation at the micro level (districts and sub-districts) and maintain a focus on implementing necessary measures for prompt and effective management. In addition, the ministry advised the strategy of test-track-treat-vaccination.

Health minister T. Harish Rao had previously urged people not to panic, but rather to be vigilant and follow appropriate precautions in order to combat the rise in positive infections. He stated that all eligible individuals must receive booster Covid vaccines in government hospitals.

The state government also decided to request to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to provide additional Covid booster shots for the state.

“We will ensure the Covid vaccines are available at all the primary health centres. Eligible persons can get themselves a booster shot at the earliest,” the health minister said.

Health officials and doctors say the current situation is not cause for concern. They noted that Covid-19 cases begin to rise in March, and a similar pattern was observed during the first three waves.

They say that Covid is on the verge of becoming endemic, but people in high-risk groups should take precautions. Children, the elderly, and those with comorbidities are among those in the group.

The health department has also stated that the recent Covid increase is unrelated to the viral fever surge.
