Telangana Sees Rise in Cybercrime Incidents: DGP Report 2023

According to the yearly report provided by Director General of Police Ravi Gupta, Hyderabad had a rise in cybercrime incidents, adding to an overall crime rate increase of 8.97% in Telangana for the year 2023.

The number of cybercrimes increased to 16,339, a 17.59% increase over the previous year’s 13,895 incidents. The report emphasized the threats posed by the drug epidemic and cybercrime, advocating a zero-tolerance stance for drug-related offenses.

Director General Ravi Gupta reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackle these concerns, emphasizing the expansion of specific wings to combat drug-related issues and cybercrime. A focus was focused on the strong legal action that will be taken against persons involved in drug peddling.

The DGP urged parents to be attentive about their children’s activities and asked educational institutions to monitor and prohibit drug sales and purchases in their area. Telangana police has been at the forefront of cybercrime investigations, establishing a unique Cyber Security Bureau, a nationwide helpline (1930), and the Telangana Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (T4C). The DGP emphasized the DGP’s pioneering efforts in banning questionable numbers and launching an SMS service for public convenience.

Director General Ravi Gupta advised residents to report any suspicious actions immediately, underlining the significance of public knowledge in combating cybercrime. According to the research, 2023 will be an incident-free year, with robust security measures in place throughout significant events such as National Assembly elections. Murders, dacoity, burglaries, rioting, kidnaps, and cheating increased during the year. Despite the increase in crime, the DGP reported a 1% decrease in fatal road accidents and a 60% decrease in serious road accidents.

The analysis predicted a total property loss of Rs. 151.78 crore in 2023, with a recovery rate of 53.82%, up from 50% the previous year. The overall conviction rate rose to 41%, with a significant increase in life sentences. During the year, the police used the Preventive Detention (PD) Act on 175 criminals.
