Telangana: Teacher arrested after Class 9 student alleges sexual harassment

Police in Telangana’s Sangareddy arrested a private school teacher for allegedly sexually harassing a Class 9 student. On Saturday, the parents of the minor girl filed a police report about the incident, and the man was arrested under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. On Sunday morning, he was sent to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Students Federation of India (SFI) held a protest on Tuesday at the District Education Officer (DEO) office in Sangareddy town, demanding that the school management be held accountable.

According to the Sangareddy DEO, after receiving information about the alleged sexual harassment, he directed the local Mandal Education Officer (MEO) to conduct an investigation into the incident and submit a report.

“We will investigate the school management’s role in the incident. We will also conduct investigations into the complaints that the teacher did not allow the student to write exams. Will take action on the school management accordingly,” he said.

A Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham (KVPS) activist who was present at the protest told the media that the student was unable to attend exams and had remained at home in a disturbed state. Her parents discovered the alleged sexual harassment after inquiring, he told reporters. He also stated that when confronted with the allegations, the school administration attempted to avoid accountability. SFI has asked for the school’s license to be revoked.

Previously, on October 21, the Telangana government revoked the license of a private school in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills after a four-year-old kindergarten student was allegedly sexually assaulted by the personal driver of the principal. The driver, Rajani Kumar, and the school principal, Madhavi, were taken into custody based on the complaint of the girl’s parents.
