On Monday, yet another man committed suicide in Telangana after being harassed by loan app agents.
Dasari Shekhar, 35, committed suicide at his home in Kothakota, Wanaparthy district. His wife reported to the police that he was upset after loan app agents threatened to send his nude photo to relatives and friends.
Shekhar had borrowed Rs 4,000 from a loan app. Despite the fact that he had repaid the loan and the interest, the app administrators continued to harass him to pay additional interest. They had informed his relatives that he defaulted on a loan repayment.
According to police, the app agents sent him his morphed photograph of himself naked and threatened to post it to his relatives and friends as well as on social media.
Police opened an investigation after receiving a complaint from Shekhar’s wife. This is the latest case in a series of such incidents reported from across the state in recent months.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in loan apps luring people with quick and easy loans. The loans typically have high interest rates and processing fees, and recovery agents later resort to various forms of harassment, including calling people on the contact list of the borrowers.
There have been multiple cases where recovery agents have threatened to morph victims’ images onto nude photographs and share them with family members and others on their contact list.
Earlier in July, a man in Hyderabad committed suicide after allegedly being harassed by loan app agents. During their investigation, it was discovered that the fireman, who worked at a fire station in Hyderabad, had borrowed a sum of money from instant loan apps and was unable to repay it due to financial difficulties.
