Tragic Suicide at RGUKT Basara: Urgent Need for Mental Health Support in Educational Institutions

The recent suicide of a student at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT) in Basara, Telangana, is terrible. Deepika, the student, allegedly killed herself in a lavatory after taking a physics exam. Despite prompt medical assistance, she was proclaimed dead at the Nirmal government hospital.

Deepika was reportedly stressed out and sought her teachers after the exam. She took the dramatic measure when they were seeking to counsel her. The incident caused authorities to launch an investigation, and a case was filed.

This is not the first time such tragic events have occurred on the Basara IIIT campus. Last year, two suicides occurred, one at the boy’s hostel and the other by a B. Tech integrated programme student. Personal concerns and pressure from rigorous restrictions were stated as reasons for those suicides.

Another instance occurred in May 2020 when a student named Bondla Sanjay leaped off a building after a disagreement with a classmate about a female.

These occurrences emphasise the significance of addressing students’ mental health concerns and providing proper support systems within educational institutions. It is critical for institutions, authorities, and society as a whole to prioritise student well-being and to foster an environment of mental health awareness and support.
