Tragic Suicide in Hyderabad Highlights Importance of Consent and Mental Health Support

A 19-year-old girl committed herself in Hyderabad by overdosing on medications since her lover refused to marry her despite their sexual relationship. The girl, who lived in Kulsumpura, had previously been betrothed to Jahangir.

However, their families called off their engagement last year owing to personal concerns. Despite the broken engagement, the couple maintained communication.

Jahangir allegedly promised the girl that he would marry her, causing her to remain hopeful. He would allegedly sexually abuse her at her home during the night. When the victim approached Jahangir about their marriage, he accused her of having several affairs and refused to marry her.

Devastated by these revelations, the teenager succumbed to sadness and took pills at home on Saturday. She was promptly brought to Osmania Hospital for treatment, but regrettably died during the night. Jahangir was arrested after the Kulsumpura police launched a case against him under Sections 376 (2) and 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

This incident emphasises the significance of education and understanding about consent, mental health, and the importance of support for people experiencing emotional distress.
