TRS MPs propose to move privilege motion against Piyush Goyal

TRS MPs submitted a notice to move a privilege motion against Piyush Goyal, the Union Food and Public Distribution Minister, for ‘deliberately misleading the Parliament and Members over the matter of export of boiled rice to other countries.’

TRS MPs Prabhakar Reddy, Venkatesh Netha, Maine Srinivas Reddy, Nama Nageswara Rao, BB Patil, Kavitha Malothu and Ranjith Reddy wrote to Lok Speaker Om Birla on Monday claiming the Union Minister said that India cannot export boiled rice under WTO restrictions, leaving State Governments to fend for themselves.

The TRS MPs said that this was in response to a suggestion by the Member that lakhs of tons of parboiled rice were lying with the states, suggesting that the rice can be exported to other countries to help farmers here.

TRS MPs said the Union Minister made a wrong and misleading statement that India cannot export under WTO rules.

As shown on the Government’s website, India exported millions of tonnes of parboiled rice to other countries. According to TRS MPs, such statements were equivalent to misleading the nation and raising the question of the privilege of the Parliament.

KCR to discuss paddy procurement

During his current visit to Delhi,  CM KCR is scheduled to meet with TRS MPs and instruct them on how to highlight various issues on which the TRS government has been contesting with the Centre, such as paddy procurement and caste-wise census.

TRS leaders have already called for protests in the capital on April 11 in response to paddy procurement and other issues. According to reports, the CM will not meet Piyush Goyal during his Delhi visit.

However, sources said that an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been requested, and it remained to be seen whether the request would be approved by the PM’s Office. The is also speculation that KCR may meet Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav during this trip to discuss more unity among parties other than the BJP to dethrone the party from power.
