TSRTC buses equipped with alarms and cameras to keep drivers alert

Drivers in a few TSRTC buses traveling on highways are now being warned about sharp curves ahead, accident-prone areas, and collision hazards. In fact, an alarm sounds whenever they are about to fall asleep behind the wheel.

As part of the iRASTE project, an alarm has been installed in a few buses on a trial basis. Emerging Technologies has taken on the project in collaboration with IIIT-Hyderabad, Intel, INAI, TSRTC, and UBER.

Aside from the sensor, three cameras have been strategically placed in the driver’s cabin to monitor them, track the route pattern in advance, and alert them in the event of a possible collision.

The system uses Artificial Intelligence and ADAS solutions to trigger the alarm based on the visuals captured by the cameras. The central server shares information with the drivers in real-time based on camera inputs and other factors.

A beep sound is generated to warn the driver of a sharp curve. Similarly, an alarm is raised based on the distance between the bus and the vehicle in the opposite direction. Another alarm is triggered based on the movement of the drivers’ eyelids.

At the moment, the alarm system is installed in 12 buses from the Secunderabad depot that travels on highways. It is unquestionably a good initiative, said a senior TSRTC official.

The pilot project was launched a few months ago, and efforts are currently underway to install the system in 200 buses over the next two months. According to an official from the Telangana IT Department’s Emerging Technologies wing, installing the system takes only about three hours.

Aside from assisting drivers, the system can aid in the identification and analysis of black spots and accident-prone areas. According to the official, while IIIT-Hyderabad is looking into the technical aspects, Intel is funding the project and Uber is providing basic training to the drivers.
