TSRTC Employees Protest Merger Law

Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) employees protested for two hours across the state on Saturday morning, asking that Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan sign the TSRTC merger law. The measure intends to create 43,474 TSRTC staff government employees, bestowing several advantages and privileges on them.

Employees boycotted work from 6 to 8 a.m. as part of the protests, causing disruptions in public transportation systems around the state. The Telangana Mazdoor Union (TMU) led these rallies, and further demonstrations were scheduled in front of the Raj Bhavan at 11 a.m.

In reaction to the protests, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan expressed her regret for the inconvenience caused to the people and assured the workers that she is thoroughly investigating the problem to protect their rights.

On July 31, 2023, the state cabinet authorized the TSRTC merger law, which intends to recognize TSRTC staff as government employees and make them eligible for all government benefits. However, the Governor’s decision to sign the measure has been postponed while she investigates all legal difficulties surrounding it.

The decision by the government to integrate TSRTC personnel with the state government comes ahead of the forthcoming assembly elections at the end of the year, adding significance to the action.
