Urban Biodiversity Wing begins Translocation of trees

After facing flak from people and the environmental activists for cutting fully grown-up trees during road widening works in the city and outskirts, the Urban Biodiversity Wing of GHMC has finally geared up to relocate the semi-shaved trees from Shivrampally on the National Highway-44 to Mailardevpally.

The Urban Bio-diversity Wing of GHMC employed an ace hydraulic crane to uproot huge trees and a heavy trailer truck to shift them to the Mailardevpally area almost 10 kilometers away from Zoo Park.

While elaborating the measures to relocate the trees, Prasanna Kumar, Manager, the Urban Biodiversity Wing GHMC, said, “The Wing has begun translocation of trees from National Highway – 44 to Milardevpally to ensure they regain their growth and flourish again. So far, over two dozen trees have been shifted from Shivarampally area to Mailardevpally this week. The trunks of the trees have been planted safely on the maiden part of the road after finding it appropriate to translocate. We have exercised this earlier too in the north of the city, but this comes for the first time in the southern part of the city in Rajendranagar.”

“We will continue this till we clear translocation of all the trees coming in the way of road widening,” the official said, adding that the “Trees are being carefully uprooted and covered before shifting them to identified locations. Preparations were made meticulously. The whole exercise is being done under expert advice and according to the action plan.”

Welcoming the Urban Biodiversity Wing’s move to translocate fully matured trees standing wayside on the roads for years, Osman Alhajri, the senior congress leader said, “We are already facing environmental issues for ignoring the important role the environment play in thriving biodiversity and ecosystem besides maintaining conducive atmosphere on the earth for the living things.”

“The urban biodiversity wing finally realised the role the fully grown-up trees played for a sustainable environment,” he said, adding that “Hope no more trees will be axed ruthlessly and discarded while taking up road widening works in the city henceforth.”
