US mission collaborates with state governments including Telangana to train teachers

Under the Regional English Language Office (RELO) programme, the US Embassy and Consulates in India collaborated with state governments in Karnataka, Telangana, and West Bengal to support the professional development of English language teachers.

Approximately 100 English language teachers and teacher trainers attended the launch of the TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) offered by the United States Embassy in New Delhi in collaboration with TESOL International, a leading organization in the field of English language teaching. The teachers are employed by the governments of Telangana, Karnataka, and West Bengal.

The TESOL Core Certificate Program is a 140-hour intensive English teacher training program. Participants in the program will learn cutting-edge, research-based teaching strategies, and upon graduation, they will be better prepared to guide their colleagues in creating student-centered, critical thinking classrooms that provide students with the English language proficiency and 21st-century skills envisioned by India’s National Education Policy, said a press release.

The US Embassy hopes that by offering these courses, it will be able to assist state governments in the professional development of a cohort of K-12 teachers, who will then be able to aid in the professional betterment of teachers in their own state.

Gloria Berbena, Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs at the US Mission, joined President of TESOL International Gabriele Kleckova in welcoming participants at the launch ceremony.

“We believe that English is an essential tool for students to gain access to higher education, improve their employment opportunities, and achieve their dreams. Teachers play a critical role in this endeavour and in shaping this country’s future,” Berbena stated

Through Regional English Language Offices at US Embassies and Consulates around the world, the US government funds English teacher education, language proficiency, and professional development programs.

This model has proven to be very effective with the Delhi government, which now has a group of about 200 mentor teachers supporting 10,000 English teachers, who in turn improve the English speaking skills of 2.2 million Delhi students.
