WHO Urges Countries To Work Together To Avoid Another Pandemic

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is calling the countries to work together to prevent another pandemic from happening in the future.

As per the latest updates, in the inaugural ceremony of the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Southeast Asia on Monday, Ghebreyesus said that the impact of the pandemic differs across the country. He said that following this, the world should come together to ensure another pandemic of this magnitude occurs in the near future.

While addressing the virtual session hosted by Nepal, many of the top health executives emphasized the need for a greater commitment towards global healthcare delivery and a risk-averse health system. Along with the importance of providing vaccinations, medicines, equipment, and technology for the region.

WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia, Poonam Khetrapal Singh further spoke about the significance of increasing the capabilities of the increasing health sector. Furthermore, Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba also stressed towards health care reaching out to people in distant areas and should be a priority for everyone.

The five-day session is being attended by representatives from different countries including Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal and India.

“This Is Unacceptable,” Says WHO Director-General 

The above statement comes after, the Director-General of the WHO pointed out that many of the countries across the world continue to face a slight increase in the cases of Covid 19 and related deaths. And this is after more than 5 billion Covid 19 vaccinations have been administered globally.

During his speech, he said that almost 75 percent of the Covid 19 doses have been administered across 10 countries. He added that Africa has the lowest vaccination coverage at 2 percent.

“This is unacceptable,” the WHO Director-General said.
