WHO, WEF have chosen Telangana for setting up their projects at Genome Valley: KTR

Two international bodies, the World Health Organization and the World Economic Forum, have chosen Telangana to establish their projects at Genome Valley, demonstrating Telangana’s capabilities in the life sciences sector. The details, including an m-rna project by the World Health Organization, would be formally announced shortly, said IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao here on Tuesday.

These developments follow Gland Pharma’s announcement of a Rs 400 crore investment in Telangana to expand its operations in Genome Valley. He also announced the establishment of the Dr Cyrus Poonawalla Centre of Excellence in infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness in Hyderabad.

The Minister told the media here that Telangana will host the 20th edition of the industry event BioAsia from February 24 to 26. In the previous 19 years, the event had hosted thought leaders from over 100 countries. It promoted Hyderabad, Telangana, and India as an investment destination for the pharma, health, and life sciences sectors, reflecting Telangana’s capabilities.

The event, which helped the State realise investments to the tune of Rs 25,000 crore in the past editions, had facilitated more than 20,000 meetings and resulted in many letters of intent (LoIs), bilateral cooperation agreements, and MoUs apart from 30 knowledge papers and policy recommendations, he said.

Invest India also showcased BioAsia as a benchmark to all the States in ‘creating exclusive and branded platforms’. Switzerland, Norway, Thailand, Korea, Argentina, Spain, UK, Germany, South Africa, and other sent large ministerial and industrial delegations to the event. Nobel Laureates, Food Laureates, Lasker Award winners, Breakthrough Prize winners, and others also took part.

It will involve 50 countries, with the UK serving as the partner country and Flanders serving as the international partner region. Delegations will arrive from Estonia, South Africa, Vietnam, Switzerland and others.

There will also be 175 exhibitors at the event. It will host a ‘Innovative Zone’ for startups, for which 400 nominations were received and 75 were shortlisted.

IT and Industries Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan and Telangana Life Sciences Director Shakti Nagappan were also present.
