16 Covid Patients Die in Fire at Hospital in Gandhinagar, Gujarat; CM Announces Probe

In a recent update coming from Gandhinagar, Gujrat 16 Covid patients have died in a fire at a Covid designated hospital. The fire broke out in the ICU ward in the middle of the night.

16 Covid Patients Die Due To Probable Oxygen Leak

As per the latest reports, the fire erupted at the Patel Welfare Hospital in the ICU at midnight. More than 50 to 60 patients were admitted to the hospital. The fire officers said that the hospital does not have an NOC for fire. The hospital is located at the Bharuch-Jambusar highway around 190 kms from Ahmedabad.

So far the exact cause of the fire is not known yet. But it is believed that out of the 16 patients that have died in the fire, 14 were in the critical condition. The cause is currently because of a leakage in the oxygen cylinders (probable). However, there is no confirmation yet.

The fire was controlled in an hour and around 50 Covid patients were rescued and then shifted to nearby hospital.

Hospital Lacked NOC Certificate

Sources reveal that the hospital did not have the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the fire department which is mandatory for them to have.

Deepak Makhija, the Bharuch regional fire officer said that the hospital’s another building does have the NOC from the fire department. But the one where the broke out didn’t. Meanwhile, Vijay Rupani Gujarat Chief Minister expressed condolences for the families of the deceased. Furthermore, he announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to the families who lost their members in the fire. The CM has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The Chief Minister has appointed two IAS officers along with the Additional Chief Secretary ACS Vipul Mitra, the labour and employment department and the Commissioner Municipalities Administration Rajkumar Beniwal to investigate the incident. Both the officials were immediately sent to the location.

The CM said that the government is considering appointing a judicial probe into the matter.
