Acoustic cameras to aid Hyd Police in detecting vehicles unnecessarily honking

In an attempt to combat unnecessary honking and the resulting noise pollution, the Hyderabad Traffic Police are planning to install acoustic cameras to detect vehicles honking beyond their allowed limits.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) AV Ranganath of the Hyderabad Traffic Department conducted a trial run of the acoustic camera to detect honking at the Police Control Room junction on Wednesday along with other senior police officials.

Before using acoustic cameras to enforce honking violations, the Joint Commissioner studied legal and technological factors that could be integrated. An acoustic camera can be used to identify horn-blaring vehicles, as demonstrated by the Acoem Group.

The acoustic camera is manufactured by Acoem, a German company. It will be integrated with the automatic number plate reading (APNR) system very soon and will be customized to meet the city’s traffic flow requirements, Ranganath said.

In various busy intersections and roads throughout the city, officials aim to reduce the noise caused by motorists using technology. Violations of the law will result in fines electronically being sent to the motorist. Among those present were Traffic DCP N Prakash Reddy, Pratik Shah of Acoem Group, and others.

This is the first time an acoustic camera will be used in Hyderabad and India, said Ranganath.

Using software, the Acoustic Camera visualizes the sound source and provides acoustic and optical images. These images will be used by the Hyderabad Traffic Police to determine whether the honking was unnecessary or not.

In mere seconds, Ranganath said, the analysis is done based on sound waves, and real-time sound imaging allows for quick results.

In several countries, including Israel, Germany, and others, acoustic cameras are being used to detect unnecessary honking.

With more trial runs, the Hyderabad Traffic Police will be able to acquire the cameras within one month. He explained that analyzing the data would be straightforward. As well as that those who have air horns in their vehicles will also be booked.
