Any food safety and quality issues can be reported via social media in Telangana

The Telangana government, on Sunday, instructed people to contact food safety officials by calling (040-21111111) or by communicating through the microblogging social networking platform Twitter (@AFCGHMC) for immediate redressal of grievances related to food poisoning, quality and safety in food products and ingredients.

State Health Minister T Harish Rao assured people that following complaints through the call centre or Twitter @AFCGHMC, quick food safety checks will be conducted by food safety officials. The meeting was attended by officials from the food safety agency, the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM), food safety inspectors from all districts, and senior health officials.

When food safety and quality standards are not implemented and maintained, the long term effect on public health cannot be denied. A total of four food-safety on-wheels worth Rs.2.4 crore were developed to maintain proper food standards. During the review meeting, Harish Rao said Rs. 10 crores worth of equipment was recently purchased for IPM’s food testing laboratory.

To protect Telangana’s food from adulteration, Task Force sleuths have been assigned

Health Minister T Harish Rao warned on Sunday that teams from the Task Force will conduct surprise inspections throughout the State if they act against food adulteration. There will be no leniency for those who harm public health by eating adulterated food, the Minister warned.

As part of a monthly meeting of senior health and food safety officials at the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) on Sunday, he participated in a health and food safety review. The Minister noted that food that has been grown with adulterants leads to long-term health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and gastrointestinal problems, and can cause fatal conditions like cancer.
