Appa Cheruvu remained a threat as rain gullies keep on emerging

Though the Irrigation officials have swiftly took up the patch work at Appa Cheruvu bund under the Rajendranagar area, the recurrent rail gullies emerging every often on the Lake Bight is kept on storing the trouble soon after wrapping up of works at a particular location.

The breaches over the bund time and again, largely due to gully erosion, putting officials into task since a year. Every time the breach appeared, the officials rushed to trawl the laborers for a temporary patch-up.

As the Lake is receiving heavy inflows from upstream areas following incessant rains coupled with heavy inflows, multiple rain gullies are being formed over the bund, most probably due to gully erosion.

Recent incident of flooding of lake on September 27 is not the first but third in the row during the last one year as gully erosion on the bund keeps on appearing time and again in the absence of concrete measures to stem the issue.

It was in the month of May this year the pre-monsoon showers brought several cracks on the bund and only after the local people alerted, the irrigation officials turned up to the lake to stock the situation. However, the gully erosion again emerged in the month of July hinting at a possible breach of bund only to receive lukewarm response again from the authorities griping lack of labors due to pandemic and at times want of funds.

The Lake, that brazenly exploited due to encroachments over the year, remained posed a great risk to the people living around and on the course of the furious water body that, if turned furious, would trampled everything on its way as happened last year.
