Centre still sitting on Telangana’s proposal for Clean Air Authority after two years

Two years after Telangana recommended the establishment of a Clean Air Authority to combat air pollution, the Centre is still sitting on the proposal.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao tweeted on Saturday: “Had proposed to Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs HS Puri ji couple of years back to set up ‘Clean Air Authorities’ by City where Government of India, State Government and City administration can work together with budgetary commitment.”

He was responding to a tweet from former Union Minister Milind Deora about Mumbai’s deteriorating air quality.

“Mumbai is logging its worst air quality, amplified by construction works for the Mumbai Metro and Coastal road. In some neighborhoods, the air quality is worse than that of Delhi. Mumbai’s roads are also dug up and turned upside down, making it one of India’s least liveable Metros.”

Rama Rao also stated that the problem was not limited to Mumbai and that all major cities in the country were facing the same issue.

Not just Mumbai Milind Ji, all of our metropolitan cities have the same challenge, he said.

KTR seeks approval for Phase II of Hyderabad Metro from Centre

K.T. Rama Rao has urged the Centre to accord in-principle approval for the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase II Project, costing Rs 8,453 crore, as a joint project between the state and the Centre with external financial assistance.

In a letter to the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, KTR, as the Minister is commonly known, requested the inclusion of the proposal in the next union budget. A 26 km long and 23 station Metro Line is proposed.

To explain the project, he sought to meet with the Union Minister. On October 27, the Telangana government sent detailed project reports (DPRs) of the project (prepared by DMRC) and other related documents to the Centre to avoid delays in the processing of the project.

Hyderabad is the fastest-growing metropolitan city in terms of growth of the real estate sector in the last three quarters and since 2019-20, he said, adding that with the opening up of all the offices in a post-Covid scenario, it is important that public transportation be expanded and strengthened.
