Chicken Prices Double in 5 Days, Meat Lovers Feel the Pinch

Chicken prices have experienced a twofold increase following the conclusion of the auspicious month of Karthika Masam on December 12. Serpentine queues were observed outside chicken and mutton shops as the month ended.

Exploiting the heightened demand, traders have doubled chicken prices, soaring from Rs 120-150 per kg to the current rate of Rs 240 within just five days. This surge is proving burdensome for meat enthusiasts, prompting them to opt for half a kg instead of the usual one kg purchase. Skinless chicken is now priced between Rs 200 and Rs 240 per kg in Telugu states.

The conclusion of Karthika Masam marks the commencement of the marriage season, coupled with impending Christmas and New Year celebrations, further propelling chicken prices. The demand-supply gap has contributed to this price hike, and traders anticipate a continuous upward trend in chicken prices.

In addition to the escalating chicken prices, vegetable costs are also skyrocketing. Mutton prices range from Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 per kg, compelling many consumers to limit their purchases to half kg or quarter kg portions.
