Dalits Being Ignored by Mayawati is an ‘Old Normal’

Lucknow: Mayawati, BSP supremo, who places herself as the undisputed head of Dalits, however, has been conspicuous by her absence in Hathras. Every political head who has even the littlest stake in Uttar Pradesh politics was seen rushing toward Hathras in the previous one week after the passing of a 19-year-old Dalit young girl, following an assault by four men that belonged to the upper caste that caused national outrage..

Despite the fact that she has been routinely tweeting about the episode and requesting action, her absence has sent an incorrect message in her own constituency.

For the individuals who have viewed Mayawati throughout the long term, her behavior on this issue didn’t come as amazement, however.

As party president and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, she never ventured out of her ivory tower to meet the individuals who were made victims of cruelties even then.

In 2014, when two Dalit young girls, both of whom were cousins, were raped and were hanged from a tree in Badaun, Mayawati didn’t venture out of her home to meet the affected families.

The BSP was, at that point, in opposition while the Samajwadi Party was in force and Mayawati could have utilized the occurrence to fortify her base among Dalits. Rather, she decided to restrict herself in her home and only gave an announcement condemning the twin killings.

Sources near the BSP president say that she doesn’t move out into the rural insides since she is sensitive to dust, an explanation that holds no water on if one is in active politics.

Another issue with Mayawati is that she doesn’t confide in anybody in her own party to represent her at such events. On the off chance that anybody attempts to surpass the brief, the individual is shown where the door is.

The BSP, accordingly, is never observed holding fights or arranging displays even at the locale levels.

A senior BSP MLA stated: “The problem with Behenji is that she is living in a time wrap and does not realize that things have changed. There is a new generation of Dalits that wants participation in power. If anyone tries to give suggestions to her, it is nothing short of blasphemy.”

Mayawati’s unwillingness to communicate with her constituency legitimately has now given an edge to Bhim Army chief, Chandrashekhar Azad, who is gradually, however certainly, building up his position in Dalit politics in Uttar Pradesh.

For instance, in the Hathras episode, Azad arrived at ground zero and remained for quite a long time with the casualty’s family while Mayawati basically tweeted her concern, tweets that greater part of Dalits most likely didn’t see.

Mayawati is wrong if she imagines that Dalits have no alternative option except for the BSP.

The Bhim Army is catching up from behind and doing it rather quick.

A past BSP head who has now joined Bhim Army, stated: “Chandrashekhar is a phone call away for his party workers. He is always available for anyone who wants to meet him. With Mayawati, there was never any hope of getting to meet her. She never developed a second-rung leadership inside the party and we could never depend on her during any crisis. Her style has been adopted by her brother Anand and her nephew Akash. This will bring the BSP to its end.”
