Day 1 of Kanti Velugu saw over 1.6 lakh people being screened

On the first day of the Kanti Velugu program on Thursday, 1,60,471 people had their vision tested in 1500 camps across the state.

While 33,221 people were identified as in need of prescription glasses, the health department distributed 37,046 pairs of reading glasses to the beneficiaries.

The screening was performed on a total of 72,580 men and 87,889 women, excluding two members of the transgender community. In contrast to the 522 screening camps held in metropolitan areas, 978 screening camps were held in rural areas.

Though the chief minister formally launched the program on Wednesday, it began operations on Thursday.

On Thursday, Health Minister T Harish Rao launched it at a camp set up at the Vivekananda Community Hall in Ameerpet, Hyderabad.

Harish Rao, speaking at the launch event, stated that, unlike the first phase, the spectacles distributed this time are made in Telangana, with eye testing taking place at 16,533 centres across the state.

Speaking on the occasion, the health minister stated that the program’s goal is to ensure avoidable blindness-free Telangana. Kanti Velugu, he said, has become another role model for the rest of the country.

Harish Rao stated that it is a source of great pride for Telangana that Chief Ministers from other states have expressed an interest in replicating Kanti Velugu in their respective states.

On the patient’s arrival at the camp, details such as name, age, gender, mobile number, Aadhar card number, social status, and address are collected for registration purposes.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, along with his counterparts, Pinarayi Vijayan from Kerala, Arvind Kejriwal from Delhi and Bhagwant Singh Mann from Punjab, formally launched the second phase of the program at the newly inaugurated Integrated District Collectorate Complex in Khammam.
