Election Commission denies MLC polls in Telangana amid corona cases

Election Commission of India today clarified that there will be no elections to MLC seats under MLA quota in Telangana state.

The SEC informed that since corona cases rising in the corona pandemic of the second wave there is no chance for any sort of polls. Both in Telangana Pradesh some MLC posts to be falling vacant in June.

The poll body at the center has made it clear that it is not possible to conduct the polls during the pandemic period.

The CEC further stated that it will think of the polls once the situation comes under control. We will make a decision on the conducting of the MLC polls only after the corona cases come under control, the poll body stated.

The state government has written a letter to the CEC stating that seven MLC posts falling vacant soon. The government appealed that the polls for the same be conducted before the deadline.

The government officials informed the poll body that the 6 MLC posts to be falling vacant as their term will come to an end on June 3. Also, one MLC seat under Governor Quota will be ending on June 16 by next month.

The MLC posts to be falling vacant in Telangana as those of who retire including — Council chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy, deputy chairman Nethi Vidyasagar, former deputy chief minister Kadiam Srihari, Akula Lalitha, B Venkateshwarlu. And also one MLC post under the Governor quota of Professor Srinivas Reddy to fall vacant.

The state government in its cabinet has decided to fill up the MLC post under the governor quota. As a result, the government has urged the CEC to fill up all including one in the governor quota.

However, the CEC has preferred to conduct the polls immediately due to corona cases rise in the second wave.

The Poll body is to hold the polls only after the situation comes under control as some states imposing a lockdown to cut the chain. Telangana too joined the states in this regard. However, the state government is likely to fill up the MLC post under the Governor quota, according to information.
