GHMC to use prefabricated ponds for Ganesh idol immersion

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will reportedly procure 24 portable prefabricated Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) ponds, which will be installed at various locations throughout the city for devotees to immerse idols during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. The city council has also decided to build 22 temporary excavated ponds for the same purpose.

The GHMC made these decisions in response to the Supreme Court’s order to the State government not to allow the immersion of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols in Hussainsagar beginning this year. Citizens and pandal organizers will be required by the civic body to immerse PoP idols only in portable and artificial ponds.

The prefabricated ponds are being purchased from Mumbai, according to a GHMC official.

The equipment will be delivered to the city in the coming days.  The components will be assembled and arranged to form portable ponds. These ponds will be 30 meters by 10 meters in size, with a depth ranging from 1.35 to 150 meters.

“Idols up to four feet tall can be immersed in these ponds,” the official said, adding that each prefabricated water pond costs between 11 and 12 lakh rupees. Meanwhile, GHMC officials informed TNIE that these ponds could be dismantled after the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and reassembled to be used as swimming pools during the summer.

GHMC to excavate 22 temporary ponds

The GHMC will excavate approximately 22 temporary ponds for idol immersion in LB Nagar (4 ponds), Charminar (5 ponds), Khairatabad (5 ponds), Secunderabad (3 ponds), Serilingampally (3 ponds), and Kukatpally (2 ponds). Excavation for temporary ponds will reportedly begin shortly.

According to GHMC officials, the idols immersed in these temporary pools will be removed from time to time, along with pooja material, and filled with fresh water.
