Govt. say no to ‘Lockdown’ while High Court remain assertive

People in Telangana state caught in a fix as the Government through its Chief Secretary is assertively announcing that no lockdown will be imposed in the state while the High Court is urging for additional restrictions as an extended measure to curb the spread of the contagion.

Both developments came today with Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar announcing that the Government is not in a mood to impose lockdown in the state as the situation is completely under control and the positive cases are by and large diminishing.

Earlier in the day, the High Court of Telangana urged the state government to consider putting in place additional remedial measures to curb the spread of covid-19 contagion besides re-evaluating the imposition of night curfew that is in effect from 20th April last month.

Though many health experts and activists have raised eyebrows over the government’s adrenaline announcement not to put the state under lock and key, the people especially the traders feel a bit sigh of relief over the decision.

“The less you think about lockdown, the more you put the life of people into jeopardy. Government should avoid setting a naught to the instructions of the high court and should revisit its decision as the present situation is not at all assertively improving and up beating. Dropping the number of positive cases in the state doesn’t mean that the contagion comes completely under control. Already the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Center K.Vijay Raghavan made it clear that a third wave of covid-19 is inevitable given the higher levels of circulating virus. The situation may turn volatile if the contagion convulsed again to say the least,” said, Kamelakar Jitender, a social activist and a Yoga Guru.

“Government may take a decision very carefully as it impacts the economy as well as the general life in the state. The state may not afford another lockdown this time given the dwindling financial condition and the political turmoil prevailing in Telangana. Traders in the state are already incurring heavy losses due to night curfew while job losses in several organized and un-organized sectors more specifically in the industrial segment is lurking again,” Argued Professor Ameeruddin, an academician.
