Hyderabad: Bonalu celebrations to commence on June 30

Golconda Bonalu will kick off the Bonalu celebrations this year on June 30, followed by Secunderabad Bonalu on July 17 and Hyderabad Bonalu on July 24.

Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav will attend the meeting to discuss the Bonalu action plan on June 21 to oversee the smooth conduct of Golconda Bonalu.

The Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resources Development Centre here hosted a meeting headed by Minister Srinivas Yadav two weeks ago.

During the occasion, Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav said during the last two years, the state government was unable to celebrate the Bonalu festival on a grand scale due to the Corona pandemic. But this time, the State government is planning to celebrate the festival in a grand manner, and officials are being required to make arrangements in this regard, Talasani said.

A total of Rs.15 crores have been sanctioned by the government for the Bonalu festival and financial assistance will be extended to 3,000 temples, including private temples across the city, and silk sarees will be presented to 26 endowment temples, the minister said.

The meeting was attended by Mohammad Mahmood Ali, Indrakaran Reddy, chief secretary Somesh Kumar, DGP Mahender Reddy, GHMC mayor Vijaya Laxmi, deputy mayor Srilatha, Government whip Prabhakar Rao, special chief secretary for the Power department Sunil Sharma, principal secretary for the Home department Ravi Gupta, MLAs Kaleru Venkatesh, Maganti Gopinath, Muta Gopal, Bethi Subhash Reddy, Police Commissioners CV Anand, Stephen Ravindra and Mahesh Bhagwat and senior officials from various departments.

Bonalu is typically celebrated during Ashada Masam. A special pooja is offered to goddess Yellamma on the festival’s first and last days. A celebration is considered a form of gratitude to the Goddess after the fulfilment of vows. The festival is celebrated in several parts of the state, including Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
