Hyderabad: Government notifies speed limit for vehicles on city roads

Earlier this week, the Telangana government notified the maximum speed limits for different types of vehicles on city roads in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

The notification informs that cars on roads with dividers must drive at a speed of 60 kph. For roads that are without dividers, the speed limit is 50 kph. Colony roads allow cars to reach speeds of up to 30 kph.

There is a 50 kph speed limit on roads with dividers for bikes, vehicles, buses, and other types of vehicles. Roads that are without dividers have a 40 kph speed limit. These vehicles are allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 30 kph on colony roads.

Central government vehicles, however, will not be subjected to the maximum speed limit.

According to the order, “Nothing in this section shall apply to any vehicle registered under Section 60 while it is being used in the execution of military manoeuvres within the area and during the period specified in the notification under the subsection of section 2 of the Manoeuvred, Field Firing and Artillery Practice Act, 1938.”

As per the new uniform speed limit, Hyderabad’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) AV Ranganath has said that the overspeeding cameras will be recalibrated.

The officials from the police department, GHMC, HMDA, R&B, RTA and NHAI met jointly and agreed on a uniform speed limit for the entire city.

The order comes a few days after the joint commissioner of the Transport Department requested that the government notify the GHMC limits of their speed limits. The transport department had issued orders allowing various officials to fix speed limits with the local police before 2017.

GHMC’s superintendent engineers were given authority to fix speed limits within their jurisdiction under the same order.
