Hyderabad to Revitalize Open Public Spaces through Urban Design

In a recent development aimed at rejuvenating open public spaces in Greater Hyderabad, an MoU was signed on Sunday between the Telangana government and Hyderabad Urban Lab Foundation (HUL). The objective of the initiative is to promote sustainable models, tools, and best practices for low-cost urban innovation and sustainable urbanization. The HUL Foundation will work in collaboration with local stakeholders, private organizations, architecture students and colleges, and non-profit and philanthropic sectors.

The focus of this initiative is to provide meaningful urban designs for public activities such as libraries, play areas, social gatherings, and points for economic convergence in informal settlements like slums, abandoned and open places, stepped spaces and places where there is rapid urbanization. The spaces will be converted into vibrant living spaces using “Urban Acupuncture” which will be achieved through low-cost intervention techniques.

The local citizens have been asked to send a list of such open spaces to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). These spaces, if left unattended, often turn dangerous from a safety viewpoint, especially for women and children. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, along with the Revenue Department and GHMC, will identify and inventory all such land parcels and over a period of time, develop them into meaningful public activities.

The Hyderabad Urban Lab Foundation, led by Anant Maringanti, presented a detailed plan to Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K.T. Rama Rao and other officials. A day later, the Department signed an MoU with HULF in the presence of the minister. This initiative will utilize effective urban designing and architecture in consultation with local stakeholders to set the plan for development for such sites. The MAUD Department and GHMC can then implement those plans for effective utilization and meaningful rejuvenation of such places.
