Hyderabad: TRS MLA pays traffic challans worth Rs 37k

Danam Nagendar, a Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA from the Khairatabad constituency, has paid all pending traffic challans on his 5 vehicles, the city police reported on Sunday. The number of challans on his vehicles totalled Rs. 37,365, with 66 active challans.

While conducting surprise checks, the police discovered five vehicles belonging to the TRS MLA from the Khairatabad constituency with one of them having 66 challans outstanding. On Sunday, the MLA’s four-wheeler driver confirmed that the pending challans had been cleared.

As for the other vehicles, the family riding in the car said that their digital payment app wasn’t working at the moment, but that they would clear the challans as soon as possible. According to the police, the challans were cleared by the evening.

“As our drive wasn’t focused on pending challans, we didn’t seize the car with so many outstanding challans. However, the challans were cleared,” a police officer said. In the past, two two-wheelers in Hyderabad and Rachakonda Commissionerate, which had over 50 pending challans, were seized.

In addition, the police reported that 72% of vehicles in the city are two-wheelers, 18% are four-wheelers, and 10% are other vehicles. Vehicles are booked in the proportion mentioned during traffic enforcement by the traffic police.

According to the police, all Hyderabad traffic police personnel have been instructed to be considerate and liberal when a passenger is travelling in a vehicle with a lady/members of the family.

In such cases, the vehicle owner would be given 72 hours to clear the challans, failing which a charge sheet would be filed.

The city traffic police offered a one-time discount on pending traffic challans in March. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Telangana police had offered a huge discount on all traffic violations between March 1 and 31. The initiative was well-received by the public.
