Hyderabad: Unseasonal rains, hailstorms may make mangoes more expensive

Mangoes, the king of fruits, are likely to become more expensive this season for mango lovers in Hyderabad. The reason for this is that unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops across the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

Unseasonal rains and hailstorms have not only harmed the mango crop, but also maize, papaya, onion, cotton, tomato, and chili. This has negatively affected the yield, and many farmers are now concerned about the impact on their livelihood.

Rainfall in Telangana exacerbates the problems of mango farmers. Despite the fact that the season began on a positive note with the daytime temperature steadily increasing since January, pest attacks followed by the rains and hailstorms have taken a toll on the crops.

Pest attacks also hampered flower-to-fruit conversion, resulting in a lower yield.

The farmers’ troubles have only been exacerbated by last week’s heavy rains and hailstorms. Many farmers are concerned about how they will survive this season.

Crop losses due to unseasonal rains and pest attacks may also have an impact on the export market, resulting in a decrease in supply and an increase in prices. A significant portion of the total mango production in the neighbouring districts of Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana is exported to foreign countries such as the Gulf countries, China, Australia, and others.

Raw mangoes are typically brought to Hyderabad markets from various parts of Telangana, but in the current year, raw mangoes have been brought to Hyderabad from neighbouring states too resulting in an increase in prices.

The mangoes are being brought to Hyderabad from Bengaluru and other places in the neighboring state of Karnataka.
