Hyderabad’s ORR to receive 21 km cycle track with solar roof

A dedicated bike track is being laid along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) alongside the large lanes for fast-moving vehicles.

Following multiple modern and environmentally friendly features at the access-controlled ORR, the State government is proposing a 21-km cycle track that, like similar facilities in South Korea, will have solar panels. There will be separated tracks for cyclists between the service road and the main carriageway.

In addition to providing protection for cyclists from the sun, rain, and other weather conditions, the facility will isolate them from main traffic in order to make their commute safer. Aside from the clean energy generated by solar panels, these benefits are also beneficial.

The track will extend 8 km from Nanakramguda to the Telangana State Police Academy (TSPA) and 13 km from Narsingi to Kollur. In addition to the 4.5-metre cycle track, Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), a branch of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), plans to have one metre of green space on either side of the track when it is ready.

The track will include several amenities for cyclists, such as parking spaces, surveillance cameras, bicycle docking stations, food courts, drinking water, restrooms, and basic bicycle repair shops.

Furthermore, infrastructure will be developed to ensure that the track is well illuminated during the early morning and at night. Solar panels on the roof will generate the electricity required for the lighting, thereby making the project self-sustaining.

It is intended to be implemented as a solar project using the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model, in which a RESCO operator will invest the total initial capital expenditure for solar panels and maintain it for 25 years, supplying power to the department at a reduced price.

Through the solar roofing of the cycle track, about 9 MW of power may be generated, and this could be used by HGCL to power ORR lighting, drip irrigation, and other needs of ORR.
