KT Rama Rao calls for NRI participation in the development of Telangana

Industries and IT Minister KT Rama Rao has encouraged the participation of the NRI community in the complete development of Telangana.

Participating in a meet-and-greet event organised by the Indian American Diaspora in San Jose, California, he exhorted the NRI community to find methods to give back to society. “It could take the shape of modernising schools, buildings, libraries, or businesses in order to create jobs. These deeds will inspire others and have a long-term impact,” he remarked, urging people to support the Government’s ‘Mana Ooru Mana Baddi’ campaign.

The government, on the other hand, was not entirely reliant on donations for this, he said.

He referred to Telangana as the most successful startup and stated that the government was focusing on addressing basic concerns such as power and drinking water. It developed a 3I slogan for overall development: Innovation, Infrastructure, and Inclusivity.

Telangana’s infrastructure in over 26,000 government schools will be upgraded over the next three years, he said.

Previously, the state had electricity outages. In 2014, installed capacity was over 7,000 MW, while demand was around 9,000 MW. Today, the installed capacity in the state is approximately 16,000 MW, with solar electricity accounting for approximately 5,000 MW, according to Rama Rao. According to him, the state prioritised short-term purchases while also increasing its capacity.

Telangana also spent over $7 billion (approximately Rs 50,000 crore) to improve the drinking water supply scenario. In addition, the state upset the irrigation segment by conceptualising, planning, and building the world’s largest lift irrigation project — the Kaleswaram Project – in around four years. The project has now become a lifeline for the state, allowing it to sustain agriculture and industry at the same time.

The state’s agricultural output has expanded dramatically, and it has surpassed Punjab in paddy production. According to Rama Rao, the state has become the country’s granary. Agriculture’s contribution to the GSDP climbed to 21% from 16% previously. The state forest cover is approaching the desired 33% of the total area. It is now more than 31%, up from 24% previously, thanks to the State’s flagship initiative Haritha Haram.

According to him, over 240 crore seedlings have been planted as part of this campaign.

Telangana, which has only 2.5 per cent of the country’s population, contributed nearly 5% of the country’s GDP. The state’s per capita income is now over Rs 2.78 lakh, a 130% rise from Rs 1.24 lakh seven years ago. Telangana’s GSDP is now over Rs 11.54 lakh crore, up from Rs 4.9 lakh crore when the state was formed.

On the industrial front, Telangana has introduced TS-iPASS, India’s most efficient single-window clearance system. It has approved around 19,000 projects with a total investment potential of more than Rs 2.3 lakh crore.

According to him, they have the potential to generate 16 lakh job opportunities, and more than 80% of the plans are now operating.

IT exports were worth Rs 57,000 crore in 2014, but have already surpassed Rs 1.45 lakh crore. He invited prospective investors to go beyond the city’s western outskirts in Hyderabad. These areas have good infrastructure and relatively inexpensive living costs. He also asked them to consider Tier 2 cities for expansion or new businesses. The state has set a goal of creating 15,000 jobs in the IT sector in Tier 2 cities.
