OU draws plans to set up massive solar power plant on campus

Osmania University (OU) has drawn plans to set up a massive solar power plant on campus to meet its energy requirements, joining the State that is leading in renewable energy.

The university intends to generate approximately 1 megawatt of solar energy to power the entire campus colleges, administrative offices, and other buildings.

According to university officials, the solar power plant is being discussed with the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation, the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited, and the National Thermal Power Corporation.

The university currently pays Rs.1 crore per month for its electricity bill. According to officials, the move will not only reduce electricity bills but will also help generate revenue for the university by transferring excess power to the grid.

The new initiative is expected to cost between Rs.5 crore and Rs.6 crore, with funds coming from grants recently allocated in the State budget for university infrastructure development. According to officials, the varsity has requested approximately Rs.170 crore of the Rs.500 crore allocated by the State government in the budget.

“We were informed that Rs.80 crore to Rs.90 crore will be released to Osmania University. Out of this money, the university is planning to set up the solar power plant and we have enough land for the same,” an official said.

Aside from the solar power plant, varsity officials intend to build another 500-bed hostel for engineering students on campus.

Officials are also communicating with the Tribal Welfare Department to build two hostels, one for men and one for women.

According to a senior official, Tribal Welfare Department officials recently visited the campus and surveyed the land. A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed soon for the construction of hostels for tribal students joining the campus colleges, the official added.

There are currently 24 hostels on campus housing 8,500 students, 70% of whom are female. Out of 12 hostels for men, four are inhabitable and the rest are in dilapidated conditions and require immediate repairs.
