Plans on restoring a 150-year-old police outpost building on Tank Bund in Hyderabad

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department may restore the outpost of the erstwhile Gandhi Nagar Police Station on Tank Bund, adding another eye-catching element to the popular area.

In addition to being historical, this structure is right on Tank Bund’s pavement. It is not currently in use by any department. In addition to a parking area, the building was constructed with stone. The Special Chief Secretary for Urban Development, Arvind Kumar, responded to an online suggestion for the restoration of the structure from heritage enthusiast and architect Asif Ali Khan.

During his tweets, Khan mentioned that the structure could still be used by the police after restoration.

“@arvindkumar_ias Sir, requesting to kindly restore this historical, small, simple structure, to it’s original glory/self. “About 150 years ago was police check post, will be fully restored to serve as tank bund police patrol station if given a chance,” he tweeted.

Hyderabad’s Nizam-era library up for restoration

Among the oldest libraries in Hyderabad, Afzalgunj State Central Library flourished along with many iconic Nizam-era monuments on the banks of river Musi. For the library, which has struggled under neglect for a long time, multiple aspects have finally fallen into place in the last week.

Researchers and bibliophiles from around the world will now have access to 45,550 rare books hosted on a digital portal built by the Telangana IT department, including Urdu, Persian, Arabic, and English. Likewise, the state’s heritage department has evaluated the library’s structure and prepared a proposal and budgetary estimate for its immediate restoration.

An Urdu book and periodical scanning project for digital preservation has been approved by a Noida-based non-profit organization. Their own funds will be used for this purpose.

Afzalgunj Library was established in 1936 by Syed Hussain Bilgrami, an educationist and former civil servant for the Nizam’s court, as part of the silver jubilee celebration of the seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, at Abids. Despite its brittle and fragile nature, today’s collection of books is inaccessible due to their rarity.
