Railway Ministry Issues Guidelines For Women Safety With Immediate Effect

With women safety becoming a rising concern in India, the Railways have issued guidelines to prevent crime against women in trains and other railway premises.

Indian Railways Issue Short Term and Long Term Plans For Women Safety

As per the latest reports, the railway ministry spokesperson informed that around 23 million passengers travel via Indian Railways everyday. And out of those 20 per cent are women. However, in recent times the crimes against women in trains and railways premises has become a huge concern.

To deal with the saem, the railways has decided to issue some guidelines that are strictly based for the safety of the women passengers and reduce the atrocities against the women in the railways.

The spokesperson also said that the guidelines are applicable to all zonal railways and the production units. The action plan includes some small term and long term measures for the women safety in trains and in railway premises.

The short term plans will be implemented immediately without any further delay. They will be implemented with the existing resources on priority. This will include keeping a watch on suspects and regular round visits by the duty officers and other staff members.

While discussing the preventing measures for the safety of women he said that they will be working on proper lighting arrangements especially in the vulnerable places as identified in the railway stations. This will also include lighting in parking lots, circulating areas, approaching roads, yards, washing lines, saloon sidings, maintenance depots etc.

The spokesperson said that the railways’ short term plans will focus on the abandoned structures in the platforms and yards along with isolated and unguarded places. He said that such structures will be demolished and are immediately in conversations with the engineering department.

But until they are demolished, the areas will be regularly checked by the duty officers and staff at all times.

No Waiting Rooms To Be Left Vacant At Any Time; Spokesperson

The spokesperson also said that as part of the women safety guidelines, any unauthorised entires and exits will be closed and monitored. At the same time, nearby pits and yards will be kept clean.

A major part of the plan also focuses on the waiting rooms. None of the waiting rooms will be left unattended and anyone who wishes to sit in them must register their entry especially at night. The staff will also be keeping tabs on what the people surf on the internet via free wifi. They railway employees will address the people who watch or surf inappropriate content on the internet.
