Retailers struggle to cope with rising lemon prices in Hyderabad

The prices of lemons have skyrocketed over the past week as a result of the onset of summer, and a single lemon is now being sold in Hyderabad for Rs 10.

Concerns over the rising price of lemons were expressed by vendors, saying consumers are not willing to purchase the citrus fruit at a much higher price.

“There has been a significant rise in prices. Previously, we could buy a whole sack of lemons for Rs 700, but now they cost Rs 3,500. A lemon costs Rs 10 and nobody wants to buy it. Lemon buyers are not accepting that the prices have gone up, so they are leaving without buying them,” Venkatesh roadside vendor told ANI.

A lady retailer, Lakshmi, claimed to be buying a whole bag of lemons for Rs 3,000 at the moment.

“I purchased the entire bag for Rs 3,000 and am selling a dozen for Rs 120, but nobody wants to buy,” she said.

She added that although green lemons can be sold after two days, yellow ones must be sold immediately because they rot. No one is willing to buy lemons at such a high price.

Several retailers also reported being surprised by the increase in the price of lemons 12 days ago. It soon spiralled out of control.

Demand increased by Ramadan

The Ramadan season has also contributed to the price increase since the twin cities have seen a surge in demand for lemons. Most obvious is the sharp rise in lime soda prices. In the past, hawkers used to charge Rs 15 for a glass of lemon soda.

They have, however, been charging Rs 20 per glass this summer. Many restaurants and outlets serving biryani serve lemon as an accompaniment, but they either don’t offer it or add just 1/8th a lemon on each plate.
