Telangana celebrates Sankranti with great zeal

On Sunday, Telangana celebrated the Sankranti festival with great zeal and excitement. Outside the houses, colourful ‘Muggu’ (rangoli) were drawn. People went to temples and offered their prayers.

Telangana’s three-day ‘Makar Sankranti’ celebrations began on Saturday with ‘Bhogi,’ the first day of the festival, when bonfires were lit.

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the harvest festival of ‘Sankranti’ is celebrated for three days as ‘Bhogi,’ ‘Sankranti,’ and ‘Kanuma’.  Sankranti is the main festival, followed by ‘Kanuma’ when cattle are worshipped.

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, and other leaders extended their greetings to the people.

Soundararajan and Raj Bhavan parivar members participated in Makar Sankranti festival celebrations at the Raj Bhavan here.

The Governor prepared the traditional Pongal dish and offered it to the Sun on the occasion of the auspicious harvest festival, according to a Raj Bhavan release.

On Saturday morning, as is customary, a ‘Bhogi’ bonfire was lit outside houses, while children and youth flew kites.

Thousands of people travelled from Hyderabad to their native places and neighbouring states to celebrate the festival.
