Telangana: Godavari, Krishna in spate with heavy inflows

With heavy inflows from Maharashtra and Karnataka, the Godavari and Krishna rivers were in spate. Water levels continued to rise in the Godavari at Bhadrachalam in Telangana, inundating low-lying areas and cutting off roads.

At Bhadrachalam, the river continued to flow above the second danger mark. Bhadrachalam’s water level was 51.6 feet on Thursday morning, and the river’s flow was 13.49 cusecs.

Low-lying villages downstream were inundated as the water level rose. Roads connecting Bhadrachalam to Dummugudem, Cherla, Venkatapuram, and Wajedu mandals (blocks) were cut off.

The Godavari is experiencing severe flooding in the Mulugu district of Telangana, according to the Central Water Commission.

Across the Krishna river, huge flood inflows continued at Srisailam. There were 3.88 lakh cusecs flowing upstream from Jurala and Sunkesala dams. In order to release the water downstream, authorities have opened 10 gates at Srisailam up to a height of 12 feet.

To release the water downstream, irrigation officials have also lifted 10 crest gates of Nagarjuna Sagar. 2.37 lakh cubic seconds of water flowed into Sagar. Nagarjuna Sagar’s current water level was 587.80 feet, compared to 590 feet at the full reservoir level.

Nagarjuna Sagar has a maximum capacity of 312.04 TMC, but its current storage capacity is 305.30 TMC.

Even though the Indravathi flood level at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh receded on Wednesday afternoon, Pranahitha’s heavy contribution was expected to keep the flood level at Bhadrachalam and downstream high with heavy rain expected in Maharashtra’s catchment areas.

Until August 15, the flood level in the Godavari at Bhadrachalam is expected to be above normal, according to a CWC advisory issued on Wednesday.

10 gates of Srisailam have been lifted

As of Wednesday evening, the Krishna Basin, Almatti, Narayanpur, and Tungabhadra projects in Karnataka, which get most of the inflows into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh projects, discharged 1.75 lakh, 1.76 lakh, and 1.81 lakh cusecs respectively. Srisailam was also flooded by the Bhima in the upstream area.
