Telangana govt aims to plant 19.54 crore saplings this Haritha Haram season

Under its eighth ‘Haritha Haram’ tree-planting drive in the State, the Telangana government aims to plant 19.54 crore saplings this year.

Planting of 8.76 crore saplings is assigned to the Panchayatraj department, 7.32 crore saplings to the municipal administration and urban development, five crore saplings to the irrigation department, and 1.54 crore saplings to the forest department.

Therefore, all open areas throughout the state have been directed to be planted extensively. Saplings will be planted near irrigation projects and along canals across the state by the irrigation department.

An overview meeting was held by Special Chief Secretary (Forests) A Shanti Kumari here on Wednesday to discuss the progress of Haritha Haram’s eighth edition.

In light of Haritha Haram’s success over the past seven years, the Special Chief Secretary directed the officials to ensure the program was implemented successfully this year as well. It is important to have coordination and mutual cooperation between the departments, she said.

At the meeting, she discussed department-specific plantation targets, sapling availability in nurseries, and planting materials.

“Haritha Haram should not be considered a routine program, and complacency will not be tolerated,” Shanti Kumari said.

With rains becoming consistent in the state, the Special Chief Secretary directed officials to expedite the sapling plantation exercise, with a focus on planting large saplings to ensure a high survival rate.

Different varieties of saplings should be planted depending on the region and soil conditions, with a focus on native species. She stated that because there were differing opinions on planting conocorpus plants, they should not be planted during the Haritha Haram program, she added.

Besides this, the SCCL also plans to plant 50 lakh saplings across 900 hectares in the State, reported the company’s Director (Operations), S Chandrashekhar. Throughout Telangana and SCCL, Telangana Ku Haritha Haram has had a visible impact over the past eight years, he said.
