Telangana: Handloom weavers to now have access to life insurance worth Rs 5 lakh

The Telangana government launched the Nethanna Beema scheme on Sunday in honor of National Handloom Day, which will provide handloom weavers with life insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh.

To implement the ‘Nethanna Beema’ scheme, the state government has partnered with the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India and designated the state department of handlooms and textiles as the nodal agency. The government pays the insurance company’s annual premiums on behalf of the beneficiaries, while LIC implements the scheme.

On National Handloom Day, the state and the federal governments have united to benefit handloom weavers, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLC Ramana said. For the first time, the Prime Minister has imposed a 5% tax on handloom and we request it be removed. No government has ever imposed a tax on the handloom, but the Prime Minister has done so for the first time. It is time for the central government to decide to make the GST zero, Ramana added.

The new schemes were introduced by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao (KTR). There was once life insurance for farmers, and now we have it for weavers as well. Since they spend their entire lives weaving, they should be insured, he added.

According to Ramana, nearly 1 lakh weavers work directly and indirectly in the textile industry in Telangana. Government officials have decided to give 5 lakh rupees to their nominees in the event of their death. It is the first time life insurance has been provided to weavers.

It is one of the best schemes for Handloom weavers, said Padma Shri awardee and weaver Chintakindi Mallesham. Life insurance is provided for the nominee of the handloom weavers in the event that they die, Mallesham added.

National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to recognize the contributions of the handloom weavers.

It is on this day that the handloom weaving community is honored and the contributions of this sector to the socioeconomic development of the country are recognized.

A national handloom day was declared by PM Modi on August 7 to mark the launch of the Swadeshi movement in 1905. Domestic products and production processes were revived as part of the movement.

In rural and semi-rural areas of our country, handlooms provide livelihoods and are symbols of our country’s rich cultural heritage. With over 70 percent of weavers and allied workers being women, this sector directly addresses women’s empowerment. The Swadeshi Movement was a defining movement in our struggle for freedom.

To commemorate the Swadeshi Movement launched on this day in 1905 in the Calcutta Town hall to protest the partition of Bengal by the British Government, August 7 has been designated National Handloom Day.

PM Modi organized the first National Handloom Day in Chennai in 2015 with the aim of making people aware of the rich history of Indian handloom. As well as celebrating India’s rich handloom heritage, the day commemorates the 1905 Swadeshi Movement, one of several campaigns designed to help the handloom industry after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the economy.
