Telangana irrigation department seeks data on Srisailam from KRMB

Before convening the next meeting of the reservoir management committee (RMC) for the formulation of rule curves for the management of the Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects, Telangana has requested the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to provide the data it has sought on the Srisailam project and water drawal components based on it.

A letter received from the river board on August 3 was responded to by the Engineer-In-Chief (General) of the Irrigation Department, which stated that the board misinterpreted Telangana’s request for information — documents and data — on the Srisailam project and its water drawal components as non-cooperation. As a result of participating in the RMC meetings, Telangana expressed its views.

He said that in a letter addressed to the river board last month, Telangana had requested copies of the correspondence between the then State Government (erstwhile Andhra Pradesh) and the Central Water Commission/Government of India as well as documents of CWC/Planning Commission approvals related to Srisailam projects. Despite being a direct stakeholder in the project, Telangana did not have access to these documents, he said.

The official stressed that Telangana’s input into the rule curves would have a direct impact on the management of Srisailam, so the data/information requested was extremely important.

Telangana has repeatedly cited the inaction of the GOI during the construction of the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator and while clearing the Srisailam Right Bank Canal, the ENC said.

According to the ENC, it has resulted in the construction of exorbitantly large infrastructure at Srisailam, enabling the state to divert large quantities of Krishna waters to an outside basin without any authority or clearance.

Moreover, he stated that it’s high time this unauthorized diversion to outside Krishna Basin is fully exposed and certain agreed principles are formulated before finalizing rule curves”. He also requested the board to provide the requested information/documents/data before the next meeting of the RMC.
