Telangana: Kanti Velugu screens 50 lakh people in 25 days

On Thursday, the Telangana government’s free mass eye screening project Kanti Velugu completed screening of 50 lakh people in just 25 working days.

The second phase of the Kanti Velugu program, which began on January 18 in Khammam by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, is on track to screen 1.5 crore people at 16,533 different locations in 100 working days.

The government of Telangana hopes to complete Kanti Velugu-II, the world’s largest free eye screening project, by June 15. Approximately 34 lakh (68 percent) of the 50 lakh people screened had no eye-related problems, while 16 lakh required medical attention.

The eye screening camps cover basic eye screening tests, on-site distribution of reading glasses, diagnosis of common eye-related diseases, and distribution of prescription glasses in one to two weeks.

Out of the 16 lakh people who required medical care, 9.5 lakh received reading glasses and 6.5 lakh received prescription glasses. Local field-level healthcare professionals such as ASHA and ANMs will distribute the prescription glasses recommended by the technical team to beneficiaries in the districts.

Recently, it was discovered that one-half of those visiting the camps have vision problems. According to medical officer Dr. S Rajesh Kumar at the camp organised at AV College, most of the patients who came for eye tests were elderly. Some people were arriving with cataracts. They have been referred for treatment to major hospitals.

Those who had minor issues were given reading glasses right away; if they needed special ones, prescription glasses would be given to them within two weeks. It was reported that about 35% required prescription glasses.
