Telangana police partner with Uber to make rides safer

Uber has integrated its emergency assistance with Telangana Police to provide automatic location sharing details in an effort to make its rides safer.

With the launch of this new safety feature on Monday, riders and cab drivers will be able to share their live location with the police, as well as their name and contact information, with the swipe of a button on the Uber app.

The location is said to be updated every four seconds, allowing police to respond quickly in critical situations and potentially save lives. The rider or driver can access the safety toolkit by tapping the blue shield icon in the app with this new feature.

When a user reaches the ‘100’ assistance in the app, he or she is prompted to swipe 100, and the user’s location and contact information are automatically shared with the police.

If users do not wish to share their location with the police, they can opt to disable the share feature. The SOS signal then will not be shared with the control room in this case, but users can still contact 100 via their phone. The user’s name, phone number, and live location – auto-updated every 4 seconds – will be shared with the police control room immediately.

The Telangana DGP, Mahender Reddy, said that this new integration will provide them with real-time user and location details that will allow them to act swiftly and save lives. Utilizing technology to improve efficiency, especially in emergency situations, is something they recognize and value.

“The safety of the people we serve is our highest priority, and technology is fundamental to how we address safety challenges in India and South Asia,” said Shiva Shailendran, Director, Supply and Cities operations, India and South Asia, Uber.
