Telangana to become a hub for additive manufacturing: KTR

Telangana will ensure quick approvals for additive manufacturing (AM) solutions developed in the state and will treat startups as partners rather than just service providers, said IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao, adding that the state would support technological advancements to ensure that they were built in India for the world.

He said Telangana was poised to become a hub for additive manufacturing, which is the use of 3D printing to make functional components such as tools and production parts, at the inauguration of the Additive Manufacturing Technology (AMTECH) expo in Hyderabad. Skyroot Aerospace, based in the city, recently launched the country’s first private rocket, which featured a 3D-printed engine, he noted.

Medical devices, aerospace, and defense will all benefit greatly from 3D printing. The presence of these three ecosystems in Hyderabad can benefit the sector. In a few years, the sector is expected to grow to $65 billion. Telangana has already established the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing (NCAM) on the Osmania University campus, and the center has worked on numerous projects in the last year, he said.

Rama Rao stated that Telangana will look to implement 3D printing solutions in government departments, particularly in the engineering and construction sectors, and that the state has established system enablers such as the NCAM, T-Hub, TSIC, WeHub, RICH, TASK, and T-Works. So far, approximately 1,500 startups have benefited.

In addition, the state has an Emerging Technologies Wing that promotes the use of new technologies in governance.

According to APVS Reddy, Chief Executive Office of the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification, an Indian Defence Research and Development Organization laboratory, many reforms have been implemented in the certification processes.

He stated that the effort is to be proactive rather than reactive in the certification process and that the company is willing to assist companies working in the additive manufacturing segment. The emphasis is on design and test adequacy as they relate to overall safety. He highlighted the importance of increased spending to improve test infrastructure and reduce turnaround time. He referred to additive manufacturing as a sunrise sector.

AM is a priority for Telangana, according to IT and Industries Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, and all efforts will be made to ensure that the Hyderabad ecosystem evolves further.

Emerging Technologies Director L Rama Devi said that the state began working on 3D printing five years ago. The demand is increasing significantly, but there is still a need to promote it among MSMEs. The emphasis should be on skill development, affordability, and innovation. The materials’ availability should be considered, as some must be imported and others may fall into the restricted materials category. These will take more time.
