Telangana: Work hours reduced for Muslims during Ramzan

With the holy month of Ramzan right around the corner, the state government on Friday announced shortened working hours for Muslims employed in government services.

Between April 3 and May 2, working hours for Muslim employees will be shortened by one hour from 5 pm to 4 pm in order to allow those who are fasting to perform necessary rituals, like breaking their fasts.

According to the order signed by Somesh Kumar, Muslims will be allowed an hour’s permission during this period, “except when their presence is needed to exigencies of services”.

WHO issues COVID guidelines for Ramzan

COVID guidelines for religious practices were released by the World Health Organization (WHO) ahead of the holy month.

Debunking myths, the organization stated that fasting doesn’t increase COVID infection risk.

If a person feels sick or experiences COVID symptoms, such as fever, cough, headache, sore throat, or fatigue, they may consult a doctor and consider a religious license to break the fast.

The organization advised keeping at least a one-meter distance between people. People were also asked to avoid gathering together. According to the guidelines, virtual gatherings are the most effective option. If this is not possible, holding events outdoors is an alternative.

When hosting an event indoors, maintaining good ventilation will be a good idea. Limiting the number of guests will also help.

Ramadan prayer at mosques should be carried out in a secure environment, as listed by WHO. They include:

  1. It is better to offer prayer at a mosque that is well ventilated or where namaz is performed outside.
  2. Take a personal prayer rug with you.
  3. Make wudu at home.

It will be the first Ramzan following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, making it a special one.

COVID restrictions were in place during the last two Ramzans, which led to people avoiding crowded places. In addition, businesses were affected as well.
