Thane man receives call to collect his own death certificate

In a bizarre incident, a man allegedly got a call from the Municipal Corporation of his area to inform him regarding the collection of his death certificate.

The news that shocked the 54-year-old man took place on Tuesday in Thane, months after he recovered from covid-19. Chandrashekhar Desai said he had contracted coronavirus in August 2020 and became well after receiving treatment at home. Local authorities had called him once during this period to enquire about his health, he added.

A resident of Manpada, Thane, Mr Desai works as a school teacher in Ghatkopar. On Tuesday, he received a call from a woman who claimed to be a worker at Thane Municipality’s health department. She said the TMC intends to issue a death certificate for Chandrasekhar Desai and consequently, asked Mr Desai to collect the same from the office.

The woman was taken aback after he identified himself as the man for whom they are issuing the death certificate. “…when I told her that she was speaking to Chandrashekhar Desai she was surprised and asked if anyone else in the family had died or been infected to Covid,” Mr Desai said. The woman later hung up the call.

He reached the Covid war room of Thane Municipal Corporation, soon after speaking to the woman, to raise a complaint against the absurd event. However, the officials allegedly did not accept the complaint and refused to take responsibility of the incident saying that they received his name for issuing a death certificate from the ICMR list. Mr Desai said the TMC officials have assured to take up the matter and solve it accordingly.

“…but my question is how can the name crop up in the ICMR list if it is not sent by the Corporation. Now they have promised me that they will take the necessary steps to correct the error,” he said.

Mr Desai was pictured outside the Thane Municipal Corporation showin ghis Aadhaar card containing his name and face to prove his identity.

The event is possibly a mistake through an error in the reporting system, officials said, adding that they are probing the matter and will find the cause of the same.
