PM Modi’s comments caused outrage across Telangana

The comments made by PM Modi sparked widespread outrage in Telangana, with people and TRS leaders taking to the streets on Wednesday to demand an unconditional apology and withdrawal of his remarks.

In Parliament on Thursday, the TRS MPs, holding placards, raised slogans and stormed into the well in both the Houses and staged protests after the respective presiding officers refused to allow them to take up the issue.

Earlier in the morning, Rajya Sabha MPs led by TRS Parliamentary Party leader K Keshava Rao filed a notice to the Secretary-General requesting that a privilege motion be moved against Modi. When Keshava Rao attempted to raise the issue in the House, Deputy Chairman Harivansh refused, stating that the House Chairman would take a decision on the matter

The TRS MPs, on the other hand, refused to budge and protested against the Prime Minister’s remarks, later staging a walkout. Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, also supported the TRS MPs and criticized the Prime Minister’s remarks.

Later, speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Keshava Rao said the Prime Minister’s remarks violated Parliamentary privileges while also hurting the people of Telangana. “Modi’s remarks are demeaning to the House’s procedures and proceedings.  This is deeply objectionable because Parliament is the temple of democracy,” he stated.

When the proceedings in Lok Sabha resumed in the evening at around 4 p.m., TRS MPs attempted to raise the privilege motion issue against the Prime Minister for his remarks. They had previously submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and the Secretary-General.

Led by Nama Nageswara Rao, the TRS MPs in Lok Sabha stormed the House podium and staged a protest before walking out. Nageswara Rao told reporters that the TRS MPs had decided to boycott the ongoing session in both Houses for two days because they were not allowed to raise the issue.
