Violence against Dalits and minorities is damaging nation’s image: KTR

The BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday said that although the Constitution, which resembles modern values, provides primary rights and security to all sections, violence against Dalits and minority sections across the country were eradicating civilisation values and eroding the country’s international reputation.

To bring a qualitative change in the country, Rao proposed a resolution stating that the party should progress with the spirit of separatist agitation. This kind of attitude (attacks) is not good for the country, he said.

Since successive governments at the Centre lacked vision and commitment, the people of the country were suffering from poverty despite vast cultivable lands and rivers, Rao said. The country has abundant water, with 70,000 tmcft flowing in rivers, but only 20,000 tmcft is being utilized; the rest is draining into the sea.

“If this water is utilised effectively, water can be supplied to all 41 crore acres of cultivable land in the country. The governments at the Centre are mute spectators to the plight of farmers even as water is going waste. This resulted in shortage of irrigated water.”

There are large reservoirs being constructed by countries that are smaller than India, said Rao. With 6,533 tmcft, a small country like Zimbabwe had the world’s largest reservoir. The country should have had at least two or three reservoirs of this size.

Despite non-cooperation from Centre, welfare activity in Telangana never stalled: KTR

Many ryots were committing suicide across the country as a result of the Union government’s failure to implement farmer-friendly policies, he stated. Water was only delivered once a week in many cities and towns, reflecting the country’s dire situation, the minister said.

Rao stated that despite having abundant natural resources and being the world’s largest democracy, India is still plagued by basic issues such as providing enough water for households and farmers, communal conflicts, and unemployment. He claimed that the country should have received electricity along the lines of Telangana, but instead, the public sector units were sold at throw away prices to corporates, he alleged.

He noted that the BJP government skipped the Census for the first time; worse, was that policies were framed based on the 2011.
