YSR Telangana Party Nears Merger with Congress

The YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP), led by Y.S. Sharmila, is on the verge of merger with the Congress party, as all impediments have been successfully overcome. Sharmila returned to Hyderabad on Friday evening after a visit to Delhi, where she met with a prominent central leader of the Congress party. While she did not reply to queries from the waiting media, insiders say the route is now clear for the merging of YSRTP and Congress.

Sharmila, who had been in Delhi for a few days, had key discussions with Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. Although rumors of a merger between YSRTP and Congress have been circulating in political circles for some time, this is the first time Sharmila has discussed the topic with a major official of the Congress party.

Sharmila’s potential joining of the Congress is expected to invigorate the party’s spirit as the Telangana Assembly elections, scheduled for the end of the year, approach. She is the daughter of late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a prominent Congress leader and former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Sharmila, the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has made it clear that she intends to concentrate completely on Telangana politics and avoid engagement in Andhra Pradesh affairs.

Sharmila has stated her intention to run for the Paleru constituency in Khammam district, and her decision has already been made public. In a related event, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, a Congress Member of Parliament, has indicated his willingness to welcome Sharmila into the Congress party. Venkat Reddy, who traveled to Hyderabad with Sharmila, told reporters about their conversation on the plane and extended an offer to her to join the celebration.
