Air India offers VRS for employees

The Tata-owned airline has launched the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) as its employees-the airline’s first step toward reducing headcount. Salt-to-steel conglomerate acquired the carrier last year.

There were 9,426 permanent employees as of November 2019.

The VRS package is available to permanent employees over 55 years of age or with 20 years of service.

The cabin crew, clerical and unskilled workforce can also apply if they are 40 or older. The memo said that employees who opt for VRS will receive an additional incentive over the ex-gratia amount.

Although the company has announced a VRS, it is also on a recruitment drive, conducting walk-in interviews for cabin crew in Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

Also, it is poaching mid-and senior-level executives from rivals to lead specialised departments such as engineering, network planning, and revenue management.

Kashyap was previously the head of engineering at low-cost carrier SpiceJet. Tata is also bringing in executives from sister companies to lead the department. Rajesh Dogra, a TCS veteran who headed Passport Seva, is now head of the customer experience and ground handling at Air India, while Satya Ramaswamy, head of strategic initiatives at Tata Digital, is the airline’s chief digital and technology officer.

Adil Noshir Tantra, head of Tata Consultancy Services in South Africa, is working on a project to revamp Air India’s website and call centre.
