Extreme heatwave grips Telangana

According to an official, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heat wave alert for parts of Telangana, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius over the next two days.

The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has issued orange (severe heatwave) alert for few pockets in Telangana districts of Adilabad, KomaramBheemAsifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Peddapally-JayashankarBhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda.

It stated that people who are exposed to the sun for an extended period of time or who do heavy work are at a higher risk of developing heat-related illness symptoms. There will be significant health concerns for vulnerable people such as infants, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic diseases. Officials from the Met Office advised people to avoid excessive heat, stay cool and avoid dehydration.

“Drink sufficient water even if you are not thirsty. Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk etc. to keep yourself hydrated,” an official said.

On Sunday, isolated pockets of severe heatwave conditions prevailed in Khammam district, as well as Adilabad, Hanumakonda, Nalgonda, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, and Peddapally districts.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, the hottest place in the state was Eesala Thakkalapalli in Peddapalli, where the temperature reached 44.8 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures of 44.5 degrees Celsius were recorded in Jamnuga, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district, and Palthem, Peddapally district.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert (heatwave) for parts of the state for June 20. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 40 and 43 degrees Celsius in isolated pockets of Adilabad, Komaram-BheemAsifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, and Suryapet.
